School book style: Black market

Black market...no offense, just a pun.
Have fun.

School book style: What's going on ?

3 girls in a cafe, enjoying their drinks and then something happens...but what ?

School book style: Old and young

Just as I redid the asian theme, I redid the old people.

Who cannot imagine an old guy waving his fist in the air,
complaining about some children ?
"Kids these days..."
The always present conflict of generations.

School book style: Tokyo girls

Back to schoolbook style.
You might remember one of my first character sheets in this style: It was about asians.
It was ok, but the characters were just standing next to each other, doing nothing and it definetely missed a background. That said, I did a new version.

Amalthea and the blue butterfly

Here's my second MLP + The last unicorn fanart and I really like it.
It was hard to combine both styles, but after some skribbles it worked.
Done again in Adobe Illustrator.

Dec 7, 2011

The red bull

I like both, My little pony: friendship is magic and The last unicorn, so I made a crossover.
And to make it more than just a fanart, I used Adobe Illustrator, to train myself in a program i barely use.

School book style: The Bus

A series of different characters and scenes inside a bus. I guess you know the one or the other story, too.

Nov 27, 2011

School book style: vehicles

Enough of the people for now, time for something else: vehicles.
I need to do some more of these. Buses and bikes are kinda tricky to draw.

Female armor design

Sometimes I'm really at war with myself about design in games, especially on armor designs for female characters.

Jack's darkest hour.
Just a little fun fanart for the pirates.

Study: Light and Shadow relation (based on Andrew Loomis)

I re-read a part of Andrew Loomis texts about light, shadow and their relation to tone and value.
Loomis defined 4 properties of tone, but I couldnt come up with a similar visually clear concept, so I left the separation out and interpreted it all in my own way.
(It's often not easy to get what exactly is meant with tone or value)

Study: Tones/values

After working on my school book style all these days, I just head to do some art theory.
I was checking on tones/values and other points of interest in different lights.
Like shown, the weaker the lightsource, the less contrast exists compared to the shadow.
Edges become softer, at least in the background, especially in a foggy scene of course, but as well in scenes with a depth effect. The range of value deffers as well, according to the light situation the range and saturation of colours diminishes with the intensity of light.

School book characters: The race

The works till now were style and character studies, but now I've taken on the challenge of movement and dynamic poses.

School book characters: India

India it is.

School book characters: Old people

Old people are always much more interesting to draw than the young ones or at least that's my opinion.

Nov 15, 2011

School book characters: Dark skinned people

Next one: Dark skinned people...or whatever is political correct.

Nov 14, 2011

School book characters: China

Now that I got the drift for this style, doing more of these is a piece of cake.
New theme is China.
The characters could be the same, just at different ages.

School book characters: Office

Working here and there might be nice, but to get a portfolio done, I had to get more detailed on what I want to do. I decided for school books, since it's a way to use a rather simple and fast style of drawing, which isnt too far away from how I work.
And I really dislike many of the school book illustrations here in Germany. To me it looks all too boring and I'm confident that a schoolbook in my style would be more interesting, since the characters are more loveable.

First shot: It's roughly office themed
I'm ok with the characters, but the outlines could still be improved to be a little more sketchy, to make it look more dynamic.

Old treasure

What's this ?
Ah, I know. It's one of my old ink drawings, I did in school.
It's still showable.

Character sketches

Hi,
I visited the Frankfurter Book Fair, last week and I was busy doing sketches, to develop my style into a less manga-ish direction, without totally breaking with it.
I want to adept to the german children's book market a little bit more.
I sketched a lot so here's a collection of skribbles I like the best.

Blizzcon 2011 Fanart contest

This year I participated in Blizzard's Fanart contest for Blizzcon 2011.
I didnt win, but I still have this nice piece of work here.

Since Blizz' seems to love fancy flashy pictures, I went for one of their recent games (Starcraft2), chose a hard "good vs evil" fight, without going for the already overused maincharacters.

Asian bird

Japan is awesome. I want to go there someday.
Until then, here's the next bird, asian style.

Sep 20, 2011

50's bird

A little while ago I made "loverbirds" and here's another birdy sketch.
Like the first one, this was realy fun. I like the colours and the slight 1950's flair.

Blizzard Accountguardian: Winner

So, here's my entry, that won me first prize in Blizzards
Account Guardian contest.

Blizzard Accountguardian: Diablo

Well I made this one for the Blizzard Account Guardian contest.
It didnt win, but another entry of mine did.
I'll post it tomorrow.

Aug 10, 2011

Loverbirds

While skribbling around I discovered, that birds seem to have an inspiring effect on me, at least if it is the topic. I'm gonna do some more of these, because I really like them.

Heads and hands

Two things I decided to practice more are hands and faces. Here are some of the sketches I did.
The arrows next to the faces indicates the direction of the light.

Geo Mini Editorial

Here's one piece of mine, I created for a pitch, regarding a science magazine for children, the Geo Mini. It's an illustrated quiz-doublepage.
There were many great entries in the pitch, but mine was one of the few lucky ones to actually be printed and paid.

Our galaxy

Another page from my sun, moon and stars project.
Our milkyway galaxy as it could look like.
This picture was a lot of work.

Sun, moon and stars

Before I did my diploma, my last project was a book about our solar system.
Here are two pages from this work.
The illustrations were done with acrylics.
Originally it was thought to be for children, to explain the stars around us, but although the illustrations are good, it now seems more fitting for an older age, so dont wonder aout the text.

Zerg Overmind Diorama

Here's a work I did for the diorama contest from Blizzard Entertainment and Alienware.
That must have been around october 2010.
For those not familiar with it, this is the Zerg Overmind from the Game "StarCraft2" by Blizzard.
Luckily my modelmade it among the Top5 (no particular order, the judges just chose their favorite 5), which granted me a 3000$ coupon for the Alienware Gamer's Shop.
Thank you Blizzard and Alienware.

Jul 14, 2011

Finished work

Here are 4 examples from my diploma project, the children's book "Connie und Viktor auf Monstersuche". The pages are not in a particular order, in this case, it's just for show.

Diploma exhibition

I almost forgot, here are two shots from my diploma project exhibition, on campus.
Please excuse the quality, I still dont have a good camera and Im no photographer either.
As you can see, the cover is a little darker than in the digital version.
My project was even noted and shown in the local newspaper.
Now that's a reason to buy one.

Jul 11, 2011

It's official now

Today, I finally removed my exhibition at school and got my diploma certificate afterwards, which makes me officially "Diplom Designer".

Jun 20, 2011

It's done !

Finally, my diploma project is basically finished.
Now I have to quickly get it to the printing shop.
And while I wait for it to be done, I work on my documentation, which is kind of a "making of" for my project, that every student has to do, although I think nobody really wants to read it.

Last steps

I did some minor changes to improve some more parts.
- Added the cat to the mother scene
- Changed the size of the children in the sewer scene (green) so they are not always the same size
- Moved the monsters in the cellar a little more to the middle, because they were too close to the edge
- Moved the red background and the windows in the corridor scene lower, because of the same reason
- Reworked some faces
- Added a paper texture and water effects for an overall look and make the open fields more interesting or for filling purposes

I added and edited the text and I think it is good like this. I'll go with Garamond regular.
For scenes with a darker background, I'd have preferred a slightly bolder font but I dont have a fitting one.

Next points:
-Cover
-Some more improvement on the faces
-More contrast to the cat scene
And maybe I'll slightly change the format, since my teach mentioned, that he does not like simple DIN pages.

Jun 16, 2011

Texting

The pictures are done so far.
The text is written, too, although it can still be changed of course.
Now I'm looking for a fitting font.

My first thought is to use something similar to Adobe Garamond Pro.
Because some backgrounds or textfields are rather dark, I'd like to compare some fonts to see which are more readable on darker ground.
I think a bit more spacing and clear letters should do, not too small of course.
(Please excuse my typography english)

Jun 14, 2011

Almost done

I dont have much time these days since I'm really busy working on my project.
All the pages are done so far, just minor changes or some tests to improve it.
Texting is one of the next steps.
I'll post more when I have more time again.
For now I have to get it done.

Jun 6, 2011

Ongoing

I finally met up with my prof and it seems that most of my work now is good, but there are some minor things to correct, like a door, head size and such things.
There's just one page I will have to change the position of the kids into the foreground because it seems, that the size of the kids is too similar throughout the pages and this change would make it more interesting.

And on we go.

May 31, 2011

Work in progress

WIP... work in progress
I'd prefer to have a feedback by my prof but somehow he's not there...since two weeks.
There's not much time left so I just have to go with it, no matter if he likes it or not.
